Seven square miles of enclosed tidal creeks on Great Inagua's northwest shore make up the Union Creek National Reserve. This shallow Creek serves as prime habitat for young Green Turtles, Chelonia mydas (typically when they are about 25 cm in length), where they may remain for decades.
Union Creek National Reserve is a critically important research site for sea turtles, especially the Green turtle. Studies on this turtle have taken place at Union Creek since 1974. Some of the most important scientific data on this endangered turtle has been provided through studies conducted here.
Research at Union Creek National Reserve is a joint project of the Bahamas National Trust and the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research at the University of Florida.
